Questions and Answers: Safaris

Questions most frequently asked of Somak Holidays by clients booking a safari.

What game will I see? In Kenya, The Masai is famous for lion while Amboseli is renowned for elephants. Visitors have a 90% chance of seeing these animals there but, on safari, you can never guarantee sightings.

When is the best time to go? First-time visitors are advised to go in the dry season when it is easier to spot the wildlife, but the rainy season is cheaper and can be fun. Avoid the school holidays, which are expensive and more crowded.

Do I need any inoculations? Not for Kenya but if you are travelling to Tanzania or taking an extension to Zanzibar, you must have a certificate of vaccination against yellow fever. Malaria is the biggest health risk in Kenya, so clients should wear long-sleeve shirts, trousers and plenty of mosquito repellent to try to prevent being bitten.

Do I need a visa? Visas must be obtained for visits to both Kenya and Tanzania. Don’t forget that if taking an extension from Kenya to Zanzibar you will also need a Tanzanian visa.
