Holland America Line names second new ship

Holland America Line is to gain a second new ship in 2018 named Nieuw Statendam.

The announcement was made by company president Orlando Ashford during the dedication ceremony of the 2,650-passenger Koningsdam.

He described the new Pinnacle-class vessel as just the start for the line as it looks to expand after six years with no new vessels.

Capable of carrying 500 more passengers than any other vessel in the fleet, Koningsdam’s first summer will be spent sailing in Northern Europe from Amsterdam.

Queen Maxima of The Netherlands performed the naming and traditional dedication of Koningsdam at the Dutch port city of Rotterdam.

HAL will be working with Superbreak to run a series of ship visits for agents to see Koningsdam over weekends in Amsterdam during the summer in addition to calls in Newcastle, Edinburgh and Portland.

Ashford said: “Holland America Line is writing the next chapter in our evolving story, yet we are a company with a deep history, and the name ms Nieuw Statendam perfectly blends our past, present and future.

“The previous Statendam ships have been among the most beloved in our history, and we eagerly anticipate sharing this beautiful new ship with our guests in 2018.”
