SIA agrees deal with Star Alliance founders

SINGAPORE Airlines took another step towards joining the Star Alliance by signing strategic agreements with founders United Airlines and SAS.

From July 1, SIA and United will co-operate on each other’s frequent flyer programmes to allow passengers to collect points on both schemes.

They will also implement joint check-in desks for customers using both airlines. This will eliminate the need to check-in twice when on connecting flights. SIA and SAS have also signed frequent flyer agreements. The airlines will also codeshare on Scandinavia-Singapore routes from the end of October, use each other’s lounges, and co-operate on networks and schedules.

These agreements with United and SAS are expected to lead to more codesharing and closer co-operation at airports when SIA formally joins the Star Alliance later this year.

At a Star Alliance meeting in Sydney earlier this month, Lufthansa chairman and chief executive Jurgen Weber revealed SIA would join the group in 1999 (Travel Weekly exclusive May 10).

SIA began its integration into the Star Alliance 18 months ago when it signed a strategic alliance with member Lufthansa.

All Nippon Airways, which is set to join the Star Alliance on October 19, will link its frequent flyer programme with members Air New Zealand, Ansett Australia and Varig from July 1.
