Travelworld looks to revolutionise agencies

AGENCY chain Travelworld will revolutionise its shops if an experimental plan at its newest branch takes off.

The Huddersfield-based retailer has introduced a coffee bar, flat-screen computers, mobile phones and individual agent desks at its new Chester shop.

The traditional late-availability window offers will also be made electronic with agents able to alter the display at the touch of a button.

Travelworld managing director Terry Fisher said: “It is important to challenge the traditional high-street travel agencies, some of which look a little outdated. We will monitor its success and look to expand the idea if it takes off. I believe this is the way forward for retailers and we can’t afford to be left behind.”

The early signs were encouraging, added Fisher.

He said the the flat screens and mobile phones ensure a clutter-free shop while the coffee bar leads to a relaxed atmosphere.

“We wanted a shop that looks informal, neat and clean,” he said.

A similar design is also being rolled out by Travel Choice, the new retail arm of First Choice which is continuing to open new shops despite the threat hanging over the future of the brand following Airtours’ bid for First Choice.

Meanwhile, 118-branch Travelworld, which is part of the expanding Airtours empire, is planning to relocate a number of its shops where leases are soon to end.

Fisher described the strategy as a “tidying up exercise.”
