Cosmos on buying trail to lift brand confidence

COSMOS is looking for acquisitions as it strives to win back declining market share and rebuild agent confidence in the brand.

New managing director Nigel Wright, who is close to completing his new management team, said talks have already taken place with two specialist companies but asking prices were too high.

The Bromley-based operator will also look to control its own product by building hotels in resort and introduce new programmes later in the year. An Internet site has already been launched.

Wright said the plan is to increase market share from its present 3.5% to 5% in two years.

“We have been seen as a soft touch in recent times but we are now going to fight for market share,”he said. “Previous management thought they had a right to succeed because the brand was so strong. Life had become a bit too comfortable.”

He added that the Mantegazza family which owns Cosmos had started “asking questions” about the state of the operation.

Wright, whose senior management team includes sales and marketing director Paul Riches, aims to focus on customer service and improving yields. A customer delivery director will soon be appointed.

He added it will aim to become the second choice at the multiples.
