THE ENGLISH Tourist Board is to be renamed English Tourism Council under changes aimed at making it a more streamlined, strategic body.
Culture secretary Chris Smith, who announced the changes last week, said in future the body’s prime role will be to provide strategic leadership to the tourism industry and to deliver the Government’s national tourism strategy.
It will support the industry in five areas – research, quality, data collection and analysis, sustainable tourism and encouraging innovation. Further details of the new body will be announced on May 12.
Smith said a replacement for current ETB chairman David Quarmby, who is giving up the post this month, would be agreed shortly.
The new chairman will help select a chief executive to replace Tim Bartlett, who left at the end of last month.
