CBI forecasts 2000 recovery

An economic recovery is expected to gather pace towards the end of this year and the beginning of 2000, delegates at the Advantage conference in Portugal were told.

Doug Godden, head of the economic policy group at the Confederation of British Industry, told Advantage members that low inflation and low interest rates would help to improve household finances as the new millennium approaches which would ultimately lead to an increase in spending on travel.

During a Travel Weekly conference session led by editor Jeremy Skidmore, Godden explained: “With the recovery of household spending, the prospects for outward travel are improved.

“The early part of this year could be more difficult but with recession avoided, the volume of business should still be up on last year.”
