Thomas Cook to axe 155 staff

THOMAS Cook has ended months of speculation by confirming it will close Carlson’s Clydebank headquarters and scrap the Inspirations brand from summer 2000.

Both moves were exclusively predicted by Travel Weekly, on February 3 and March 1.

The group also announced plans to centralise all its northern-based operations in Bradford.

Up to 155 staff are expected to be made redundant following the first phase of integration with a further 170 found positions elsewhere in the company.

Among the casualties are Carlson IT director Bill Donaldson, who will leave this month, and Worldchoice managing director Chris Browne.

Although Thomas Cook said it was keen to retain Browne, sources said she will almost certainly leave.

Thomas Cook may axe more brands as it continues reviewing its portfolio.

No decision has been taken on who will head Caledonian and Flying Colours.

Thomas Cook UK and Ireland chief executive Nigel Hards said it was possible both brands will be retained long term.

Meanwhile, Inspirations has dropped Peach Air and rebranded two Tristars to Caledonian.
