Slovenia
Suitable for: beginners, intermediates, and families, particularly Kranjska Gora. There is lots to do at nearby Lake Bled, including Bled Castle and church, and shopping trips.
Eating out: about £8 for two pizzas, beers and soft drinks; a bowl of soup costs about £1.50. Wine in restaurants costs about £4 a bottle.
Best feature: very picturesque compared to Austrian resorts and much cheaper. Skiers will pay half the package price of other European resorts.
Drawback: the runs are short (although this isn’t a problem for beginners).
Prices: seven nights at the three-star Hotel Larix costs from £273 per person, half board with Crystal Holidays, including flights. Children under 12 stay free when sharing with two adults. For £99, adults can hire skis and boots, ski school tuition, and a beginners lift pass for six days. On certain dates, children also get free lift passes and tuition.
Facilities for children: Crystal runs a Whizz Kids’ Club at Hotel Kompas in Kranjska Gora.
