Hypermarkets prepare for ‘video staff’

HOLIDAYHypermarkets plans to install video sales assistants in its stores talking live from its Stourbridge call centre when shop staff are busy.

The chain said although the technology was ready, it wanted to see how the videos were received when they were shown at the Holiday and Travel ’99 show at the weekend.

Managing director John Donnelly said the video conferencing and video phone systems will be used at peak times. “We believe there is no substitute for speaking to an expert face to face, even if it is via a video phone.”

If the initiative is popular at the show, videos will be rolled out to all its existing six stores and the 18 which are due to open during 1999.
