EASTERN Europe specialists are offering tours providing opportunities to witness the eclipse of the sun in Hungary and Romania on August 11 this year.
The ideal vantage point to see the eclipse in Hungary is the Lake Balaton region, according to Danube Travel managing director Gyorgyi Berenyi.
“There is a strip 50km wide, where people can see the eclipse.
“There are three cities in this strip – Tihany, Szeged and Badacsonytomaj – from where you will see the total eclipse.”
To keep pace with demand, Danube has added two extra three-night itineraries to the Lake Balaton region of Hungary, after selling out its brochured trip to the lakeside village of Tihany.
The additional packages – based on bed-and-breakfast accommodationin three-star hotels from August 10-13 – cost ú366 in Szeged and ú391 inBadacsonytomaj.
“The Tihany tour sold out within five days of going on sale,” said operations manager Klara Sido. “Fortunately we’ve been able to locate more available rooms in the area.”
A second specialist operator, Fregata, has used the eclipse, which in Bucharest will be the longest in Europe at 2mins 23secs, to add an extra dimension to city breaks.
The company offers a five-night eclipse package, costing ú845 and including a ticket for the concert by tenor Luciano Pavarotti. Clients stay at the four-star Crowne Plaza on a bed-and-breakfast basis.
