Kingshott pays price of Avro system investment

THE Globus group has made Avro sales and marketing director Roger Kingshott redundant after 14 years as part of a cost-cutting initiative.

Administration director Beverley Mayle is also leaving after six years with Avro.

Managing director Roy Woodward said Avro was cutting costs in a bid to put more resources into developing its agents’ booking system ORBIT.

Woodward said: “We were not going forward correctly with links between our Information Technology and sales and marketing. ORBIT was not being developed as fast as possible.

“Our administration was too hierarchical and we do not need all our departments.”

He added Kingshott, 54, and Mayle were brought in five years ago to review the operation.

Kingshott was previously group sales and marketing director for both Avro and its sister companyCosmos.

“In the past the priorities were internal, but that stabilisation is complete,” said Woodward.

The remaining Avro team has been restructured following the redundancies. Former special projects director Haico Van Der Steen has been promoted to distribution director with board responsibilities to push ORBIT’s expansion.

The former Eurotunnel marketing manager will look at further ways for Avro to use electronic distribution to increase bookings.

He will also look at Internet opportunities for Avro and be responsible for establishing closer links with travel agents.

Woodward added the drive for greater efficiencies through more use of cost-effective technology was essential if Avro was to remain competitive with low-cost airline rivals.

Former Portman Travel and Owners Abroad financial controller Duncan Boffey is joining Avro on March 22 as finance director.

His appointment gives Avro a new board of Woodward, Van Dr Steen, commercial director Maggie Hollowed and Boffey.

The departure of Kingshott follows previous announcements about Globus colleagues. Cosmos overseas director Andy Sawicki is retiring at the end of the year after 23 years, while finance director Mike Austin is retiring in April after 27 years.
