Airwaves’ focus shifts with move upmarket

AIRWAVES has added more upmarket properties to its Caribbean portfolio and will focus on the smaller islands to differentiate itself from new owner Kuoni.

New hotels for 1999 include the five-star Sonesta hotel in Anguilla, the five-star Curtain Bluff in Antigua and Little Dix Bay in Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands.

“The idea is to add more five-star properties because that’s the way we’re heading. We will accelerate this strategy now we have joined the Kuoni stable,” said Airwaves managing director Bill Archer. “We see more opportunity at that end of the market. The three-star end is very competitive – it’s where the big players are.”

Also new for this year is Varadero in Cuba, where Airwaves offers the four-star Club Varadero and four-star Melia Las Americas.
