UKrestructure forces Hertz to plan job cuts

Hard times:Hertz will provide staff with a few options before redundancies are discussed

Hertz Europe is to make a number of redundancies following a restructure of its UK operations.

The firm plans to merge its support staff, including areas such as human resources and accountancy, which will lead to an undisclosed number of job losses for those whose positions will be duplicated.

Marketing and sales for the UK and Europe will be handled from the same offices in Hounslow, west London, but it is not thought redundancies will occur in this section.

A question mark also hangs over Hertz’s UK operations base in Norbury, south London, which may close following the restructure.

A spokesman for the firm said: “Norbury might close in the future but that’s not a certainty – a decision will be taken further down the line.”

He refused to say how many redundancies the firm will be making, saying only that staff were being consulted.

“Redundancies will be shaken out fairly soon and most of them will happen by the first week in February but we can’t identify how many until employees affected by the changes are consulted. It’s only fair everyone is spoken to and options are laid out before we start talking about the number of redundancies.”

He denied that the rationalisation plan was in any way related to poor sales performances last year, adding: “In the last three quarterly earnings reports we have had record results and the company is performing well.”
