Questions and Answers: National Car Rental

We asked National Car Rental what questions are most frequently asked by travel agents booking car rental

Are there any restrictions on unlimited mileage?

In the UK there are no restrictions, unless the rental period exceeds 28 days, in which case the renter receives free mileage of 2,800 miles per 28 days. Thereafter 10p per mile is levied.

How many hours notice is required for a late booking?

National asks for a minimum 24hrs for a UK booking for A-D group although in most cases a car can be sourced within 2hrs. To take a vehicle outside the UK, 48hrs’ notice is required to arrange green-card insurance and RAC breakdown cover.

Do all European countries require fully comprehensive insurance?

No. The inclusive rate covers collision damage waiver or collision damage reduction and the legal minimum insurances for each country. The customer will, however, be liable for a non-waivable excess.

Is collision damage waiver an insurance?

It is not technically a form of insurance. CDW reduces personal liability in respect of accidental damage to the vehicle. Without CDW, the hirer is responsible for any damage up to the full value of the vehicle.

On the continent, is there an additional charge for second drivers?

In most countries, including France and Germany, there is no additional charge but in Ireland, a surcharge is incurred. Agents should check at the time of booking.
