ABTA is looking at hiring health and safety experts to work with members and ensure overseas hotels are kept up to scratch.
The move follows a refusal by the Federation of Tour Operators to release a list of properties which have been checked by its members, saying it was collated at their expense. (Travel Weekly October 28).
ABTA consumer affairs officials are also encouraging small operators who share the same hotels to examine the property together and split the cost.
ABTA chief executive Ian Reynolds said: “From a shortlist of three firms, we will select one to work with members on health and safety overseas. We hope to negotiate special rates for members.”
