Jamaica troops to help combat tourist attacks

THEJAMAICAN government is planning to deploy troops in holiday resorts in an effort to combat crime against tourists.

The move follows two robberies involving groups of German holidaymakers in November and December last year.

Tourism minister Francis Tulloch is expected to announce where the Jamaican Defence Force will be used, and what duties the troops will perform.

It is understood they will be deployed in areas where there is a shortage of police and will not be armed or in uniform.

Federation of Tour Operators secretary-general Alan Flook said he was delighted the Jamaican government had reacted so swiftly and positively to solve the problem of crime against holidaymakers.

However, he fears publicity about the use of troops could deter tourists from visiting Jamaica.

“It will inevitably give the impression of troops being on the street,” he said.

Jetlife product director Gill Harvey said she was reassured the troops would not be armed or wear uniform.

“Everything the Jamaican government can possibly do to prevent crime in Jamaica can only help the tourism industry,” she said.
