Bristol Airport introducesnew hi-tech security system

BRISTOLInternational Airport has said the use of a new security system that could change the way airports operate has proved successful.

Passengers’ images are captured on film and assigned a barcode identification on boarding passes when they travel through the departures area. At the aircraft gate, the barcode is matched with the boarding pass to ensure passengers have not breached security. The airport installed the system in its new terminal last month. It allows the airport to offer its departure lounge to international and domestic customers. Previously, both types of passenger had to be kept apart. The system is also in operation at Gatwick. Savings from the initiative mean airports can spend less on separate lounges and security arrangements.

Improved technology will eventually be used at airports to enable passengers to have all their passport, visa and other details stored in a computer chip which check-in desks, immigration and security will be able to read.
