Well done to The Gambia

I thoroughly enjoyed your article on The Gambia. It is about six years since I visited but I agree with The Gambia National Tourist Office’s stand on the building of hotels.

Their decision to halt the building of hotels in prime beach front locations, unless they are four or five-star hotels, is an admirable stance and I hope they have the courage of their conviction to stand by it.

Often countries have a ramshackle collection ofrun-down properties in their beach areas and, more often than not, better quality accommodation skirting the resort. There is not enough of the west coast of Africa open to tourism, nor likely to open. For the Gambians to protect their product is refreshing.

Regarding the barring of all inclusive resorts, I have never taken a holiday on anall-inclusive basis, preferring to try out the local delights.

Appreciating what a poor country The Gambia is, it is a decision I respect.
