Dallas makes bid to host 2012 Olympic Games

DALLAS is bidding to become the US nominee city to host the 2012 Olympic Games.

It is expecting to know by October 2002 whether its proposal to stage the event has beaten seven other US contenders for a place in the final challenge by six other worldwide destinations.

Dave Whitney, president and chief operating officer of the Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau, said: “There’s a real sense of excitement that we can win the bid and what Dallas benefits from is not only the business from 17 days of Olympic events but the facilities left behind.

“A wide range of improvements to our infrastructure are already planned, but winning the Olympic bid will accelerate these with the help of federal, state and private investment.”

This would include the extension of rapid-transit links around the city, more hotel accommodation and new tourist attractions and facilities. “If we are successful, we would also benefit from the fact that all the events for the Olympics would be located in north Texas, including Dallas, Fort Worth, Waco and Denton, some 40 miles away,” said Whitney.
