New museum pays homage to VIPwomen

THE first official US millennium project nearing completion in Dallas will benefit from the female touch.

When it opens in October next year, The Women’s Museum: An Institute for the Future, will be the first attraction in the US that marks women’s accomplishments in US history. Based in a former opera house built in 1913 in the city’s historic Fair Park, the $28m project will be established as a non-profit educational foundation as well as a high-tech, interactive museum.

Its design team includes women who have been involved in the creation of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem in New York and the newly expanded State Capitol in Austin, Texas. Another newcomer heading up technology development for the museum is a former woman NASA expert involved in the shuttle space programme.

President of the museum’s board of directors Cathy Bonner said: “It will be the first museum in the US dedicated to famous women and it will cover the fields of sports, adventure, technology, science, health and business.”

On entering the museum, a 30ft-high ‘electronic quilt’ will show 35 image ‘patches’ of photos and quotes from famous women pioneers. Delegates to Pow Wow will get a preview of the museum, which will be open daily from 10am to 5pm.
