The curtain goes up on new theatre shows




City to display its attractions to delegates

Weekend Getaway ground packages, featuring hotel accommodation and tickets to attractions from $79 per person.


Visitors will also be able to see new shows and exhibits this summer, including the Houston Museum of National Science’s landmark exhibition called Kremlin Gold, 1,000 years of Russian Gems and Jewels.


The latest summer shows in the theatre district feature Titanic by the Houston Broadway Series at Jones Hall; Evita and Buddy! at the Wortham Centre, presented by the Theatre Under the Stars group; and productions of Arsenic and Old Lace and Toward Zero at the Alley Theatre.


The $85m Hobby Centre for the Performing Arts is taking shape and will be fully operational next year featuring a 2,650-seat hall, 500-seattheatre and restaurant. It will be the home of the city’s resident troupes such as Theatre Under the Stars and the Houston Broadway Series.


Houston is famous for its designer shopping and a new $200m retail and entertainment centre, Katy Mills, is being promoted as a shopping theme park just 20mins drive west of the city centre.


Houston is also showing that it can compete with Dallas for large-scale conventions and meetings.


Expansion plans for the George R Brown Convention Centre have been approved that will nearly double its capacity for conferences and exhibitions to 1m sq ft. The $110m project coincides with the construction of a new hotel on site.


The Convention Centre Hotel, to be built on the south side of the convention complex, is expected to offer 1,000 rooms and be ready by 2003.


Already available to the conference market is the $35m Sheraton Suites Hotel, which opened last month. The full-service property features 286 suites within 14 storeys and offers 8,000sq ft of meeting and banqueting space, including a 4,200sq ft Grand Ballroom. The hotel is in the uptown shopping district and near the downtown area.


THE cityof Houston will be out in force at Pow Wow and wants to draw delegates’ attention to a number of new developments.


The Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau is also aiming to get buyers to see some of the new attractions coming on line during their visit.
