So can you JMC any profits?

What a joy it must be to work at Thomas Cook.

Free from the constraints of being a public company, it was able to spend a bucket load of money on rebranding and integration last year – some £42m to be precise – without worrying too much about making profits.

In fact, if it hadn’t been for that handy investment in First Choice, the rebranding and investment would have plunged the company into the red.

Can you imagine the furore if Thomson or Airtours turned in results like that?

Thomas Cook still has the best brand in travel and a tour operation that, although it still sounds slightly strange, is well on the way to becoming a household name.

But it’s profits that count and if they don’t improve, we may see Cook’s German owners decide to put one of their own in charge of UK tour operations.
