Almaty earmarked as most expensive business city

ALMATY in Kazakhstan is the most expensive city in the world in which to do business, according to a survey by consultants ECA International.

It costs £288.56 a day for business travellers in Almaty, 18% more than it costs in London.

The cheapest of the 116 cities in the survey was Johannesburg, where it only costs £81.53 per day.

The daily amount includes the cost of accommodation in a four-star hotel, continental breakfast, laundry, lunch and dinner, alcoholic and soft drinks, incidentals and two-mile, in-town taxi journeys.

ECA chief economist Barry Rodin said: “Hotel costs account for a large portion of the daily rates across the board.

“Almaty, for example, has only two four-star hotels recommended by the Official Hotels Guide, and Luanda in Angola has only one, so demand and therefore costs for these are high.

“Hotels are also the reason London is expensive for business travellers, costing on average £138.90 per night excluding breakfast.”
