Berlin: a good city alternative

Berlin to act as alternative base for Expo

The Berlin Tourist Board is promoting the city as an alternative base for British visitors to Expo 2000, stressing its cultural attractions, newly renovated hotel stock and high-speed train link to Hanover.

Berlin Tourismus Marketing communications manager Natascha Kompatzki said: “Berlin is very close to Hanover. It is only 94mins by high-speed train. We’re convinced many people will want to stay in Berlin while doing a day trip to Hanover. We have so much to offer culturally. We have three opera houses, 170 museums and 135 theatres.

“Also, Hanover hotels can cost up to twice the price of Berlin hotels. In Berlin, the average price of a double room per night is about £50. We have 58,500 hotel beds in Berlin. We have seen huge investment from hotel chains such as Four Seasons, Dorint, Radisson and Maritim,” she added.

Kompatzki also stressed that Berlin is a good destination for 20-somethings. “Restaurants and clubs stay open all night, which is good for young people. At the Love Parade music festival weekend on July 8, you can start dancing on Friday and stay until Sunday.”

The most important event this year will be the city’s celebration of 10 years of reunification on October 3 2000, followed by the New Year celebrations around the city’s famous landmark, the Brandenburg Gate.
