5 reasons to visit Liverpool in 2022

With a new food festival and a host of events, all eyes are on Liverpool this year

We love…

Tate Liverpool
The northern outpost of this modern and contemporary art gallery is, fittingly, set in a former warehouse. There’s a charge for some exhibitions but entry to the rotating displays of its vast collection is free. It’s due to host the prestigious – and often controversial – Turner Prize from October 20 this year to March 19, 2023.

Star attraction…

Liverpool Waterfront
The city’s waterfront – dominated by architectural gems the Three Graces and the ultra-contemporary Museum of Liverpool – is worth exploring at any time of year.

Don’t miss the hip independent eateries and bars, or the Merseyside Maritime Museum in the regenerated warehouses of Royal Albert Dock, and be sure to take a ferry across the Mersey to admire the skyline from the water.

Make time for…

Festivals, events and openings
2022 is a big year for Liverpool, with the arrival of a new food festival, Taste Liverpool, Drink Bordeaux, on June 5, and the World Gymnastics Championships coming to the city in the autumn. The multimillion-pound Shakespeare North Playhouse is also due to open in nearby Prescot this summer, completing a Shakespearean triangle with Stratford-upon-Avon and London.

The contemporary structure will be home to a 350-seat timber-framed theatre (modelled on the Elizabethan Cockpit-in-Court), an exhibition space, outdoor performance garden and education centre, and will present plays ranging from Shakespeare’s tragedies to musical comedy.

Don’t miss…

RLB360
Take a tour of the Royal Liver Building – one of the Three Graces, topped by two mythical liver birds that are symbols of the city. For a bird’s-eye view and an immersive digital exhibition, take the lift to the 10th floor, then climb the 125-or-so steps to the historic clock tower.

Get in tune…

British Music Experience
The Beatles may be Liverpool’s most famous musical export – be sure to check out The Beatles Story and the Liverpool Beatles Museum – but head to the BME for an all-round British music extravaganza.

Set in the Cunard Building, it’s home to more than 600 music-themed artefacts, including David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust costume. You can even learn to strum a legendary Gibson guitar.
