Global Travel Marketplace plants 604 trees through sustainability partnership

Organisers of travel trade event Global Travel Marketplace have announced 604 trees have been planted through a sustainability partnership with Trees4Travel.

The tree planting will be accompanied by 99.12 tons worth of investment into renewable energy through the United Nations Certified Emissions Reduction programmes.

Trees4Travel calculated the offsets based on an emissions report produced for the three-day event held at the Leonardo Royal London St Paul’s hotel earlier in September.

Factors taken into consideration included 861 sq m of event space for 325 attendees, 616 room nights, 950 meals, 141 flights for delegates and 133 rail trips.

Speaking in the run-up to the event, Trees4Travel chief executive and co-founder Nico Nicholas said: “We are proud to be inspiring positive change by working together with Global Travel Marketplace, helping in the fight against climate change and helping to make travel and events more ethical and sustainable.

“Our partnership and values are clearly aligned for a better, safer, more equitable world.”

David Benitez, head of events development at Travel Weekly parent Jacobs Media Group, which organises GTM, hailed the event as “fantastic”, with a 50% year-on-year increase in the number of meetings held.

On the climate project, he said: “We want to be portrayed as an event that is not only talking about sustainability, but taking steps.”
