Aircraft leased in to help relieve Iceland bad weather backlog

Bad weather in Iceland which has caused major flight disruption is forecast to improve today (Wednesday).

Icelandair described the outlook as “good” adding: “We will be working hard to run as many flights as we possibly can.

“However, we expect there may be some continued disruptions to flights due to the events of the past few days.”

Two additional aircraft have been leased in to respond to problems at Keflavik airport which forced the closure of the only road to the capital of Reykjavik.

The road reopened yesterday but passengers have been encouraged to use public transport instead of driving to the airport.

The carrier expects to clarify what options are available “in terms of setting up extra flights in addition to those which will already be provided by the temporarily leased aircraft joining our fleet”.

The Foreign Office warned in updated travel advice: “There is a severe weather warning across the whole of Iceland and many roads are closed.

“Police are advising people to stay at home. High winds and dangerous icy road conditions are causing major flight disruption and affecting movement to/from Keflavik International airport due to road closures.

“Conditions are not expected to improve until December 21. If you are stuck at the airport and need urgent medical assistance, please make yourself known to the authorities or airport staff or call 112.”
