British Airline Pilots’ Association (Balpa) has elected a former British Airways pilot to the role of general secretary.
Captain Martin Chalk takes on the position at the pilots’ union on a permanent basis after a three-month stint as acting general secretary.
In addition to his backgrond as a pilot, Chalk has held leadership roles at the European Cockpit Association and The International Federation of Air Line Pilots’ Association.
Brian Strutton, Balpa’s former general secretary, stepped down at the end of July.
Chalk said he felt “humbled” to have been voted into the role and pledged to raise the profile of Balpa and ensure the voice of pilots is heard.
He added: “I am proud to be a professional pilot – the most successful profession, if the measure of success is the number of times, we achieve our primary goal of a safe flight.
“The members, representatives and staff of Balpa still combine to ensure every flight is a safe flight. They unite to ensure every professional pilot works under an agreement which is fair and rewards the education, skill and experience required and they together represent the very best of our profession to the world.”
