Terrorists are “very likely” to try and carry out attacks in Sweden, the Foreign Office has warned British travellers.
The alert follows a series of protests in which the Koran has been burnt by right-wing extremists opposed to immigration in Sweden.
In updated travel advice on Sunday, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office said that the attacks “could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by foreigners”.
The alert added: “The authorities in Sweden have successfully disrupted a number of planned attacks and made a number of arrests.
“There is a heightened threat of terrorist attacks globally against UK interests and British nationals, from groups or individuals motivated by the conflict in Iraq and Syria. You should be vigilant at this time.”
Protestors in Iraq last month set fire to the Swedish embassy in Baghdad.
Sweden’s national security advisor Henrik Landerholm was quoted by The Telegraph as saying: “The security situation has deteriorated and Sweden has gone from being a legitimate to a priority target.
“The government and responsible authorities are following developments.”
Swedish prime minister Ulf Kristersson said: “It is extremely important to stop dangerous people from coming to Sweden.”
