Countries issue UK travel alerts over anti-immigration riots

Australia and the United Arab Emirates are among counties to have warned tourists of the risk to their safety from anti-immigration protests and riots in the UK.

Nigeria, Malaysia and Indonesia have also issued travel advisories alerting their citizens to be on high alert over the continuing unrest.

The Australian government said travellers to the UK should “exercise a high degree of caution”.

It said in an update issued yesterday (Monday): “Avoid areas where protests are occurring due to the potential for disruption and violence. Monitor the media for information and updates. Follow the instructions of local authorities.”

The UAE said an “unstable security situation in various cities across the UK” could put travellers at risk.

Malaysia earlier advised people to stay away from protest areas.

The violence has affected town and city centres across the country, including tourist destinations such as Manchester and Liverpool, where riots on Saturday took place close to the Beatles Story Experience and the Royal Albert Dock, a former Unesco world heritage site.

The unrest spread on Monday night to Belfast, Darlington and Plymouth.

Police said they had made 378 arrests since disorder broke out last week with further arrests and charges expected.

Downing Street issued a warning to social media companies that there was more “they can and should be doing” to counter “misleading and inflammatory material hosted on their platforms”.
