ITB trade show faces air and rail strike disruption

The final day of German travel trade show ITB faces disruption due to strikes at Lufthansa, Deutsche Bahn trains and Berlin’s S-Bahn light rail network.

Walkouts are planned to start on Wednesday, the day before the closure of the vast exhibition, which attracts more than 24,000 delegates and visitors from around the world.

Lufthansa ground staff members of the Verdi union plan the latest wave of ongoing strike action from 8pm local time on March 6 until 7.10am on Saturday morning.

The German carrier warned of “extensive effects” to its flying programme, likely to impact more than 200,000 passengers.

The pay dispute involves a demand of a 12% pay rise for workers or a minimum of €500 per month, whichever is higher.

Lufthansa has offered pay increases over an extended period but Verdi says they do not meet its demands.

Seven airports in Germany were affected by walkouts on February 20, with grounded flights affecting around 100,000 passengers, while another strike was held on February 28.

ITB organisers warned of disruption due to the action at Lufthansa plus a strike by train drivers on Thursday and Friday restricting transport to the Berlin Exhibition Grounds where the show is staged.

The event opens today (Tuesday).
