Norse Atlantic Airways secures Gatwick slots ahead of summer start

Start-up carrier Norse Atlantic Airways said it has secured slots at Gatwick, as it plans to launch low-cost long-haul services from the airport this summer.

The airline has gained two daily slot pairs at the London airport, from where it will start flying UK services with Boeing 787 Dreamliners. The routes from Gatwick are still to be confirmed.

The airline had previously hoped to start flying by the early second quarter of 2022 but has now said its first flights will be in June, with tickets going on sale in April.

It will initially fly between Norway and the US, adding other European destinations, such as Paris and London, “as soon as the market situation allows”.

The airline said in a statement that the current market is affected “by the tragic events unfolding in Ukraine that have resulted in increased fuel prices and uncertainties relating to travel demand”.

Bjørn Tore Larsen, chief executive and founder of Norse, commented: “The tragedy unfolding in Ukraine creates uncertainties within international air transport that we take seriously.

“Norse’s flexible fleet arrangements, low-cost base and strong financial foundation allow us to take a careful approach to launch.

“We are in a unique position as we have not yet started flying, which gives us the advantage to enter the market cautiously in line with demand and quickly adapt to unforeseen events.

“We strongly believe that the demand will bounce back with full force because people will want to explore new destinations, visit friends and family and travel for business.”

It has nine Boeing 787 Dreamliners at Oslo airport and a further six will be delivered in the coming months.

Larsen added: “We’re thrilled to have been awarded slots to operate flights to and from London Gatwick Airport as it gives us access to one of the most attractive markets in Europe.”

Stewart Wingate, Gatwick chief executive, added: “These new services mean we can offer our passengers some great value long-haul fares, a fantastic experience onboard modern, cleaner aircraft, and even more choice of destination.”

Founded in March 2021, Norse aims to serve destinations including New York, Florida, Paris, London and Oslo.
