US aviation authorities are to investigate an American Airlines aircraft fire after a flight was diverted following “engine vibrations”.
An engine of the Boeing 737-800 caught fire after landing in Denver.
Passengers were seen on social media evacuating along a wing of the aircraft.
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the aircraft was en-route from Colorado Springs to Dallas when it diverted to Denver after the crew reported engine vibrations.
All 172 passengers and six crew members on board evacuated and six passengers were later taken to hospital for further evaluation.
Video footage showed passengers standing on the wing of the aircraft as ladders and slides were used to help them evacuate safely.
“Flight 1006 diverted to and landed safely at Denver International airport around 5.15pm local time on Thursday after the crew reported engine vibrations,” the FAA said.
“After landing and while taxiing to the gate an engine caught fire and passengers evacuated the aircraft using the slides.
“The FAA will investigate.”
American Airlines said the aircraft “experienced an engine-related issue” after landing at the airport.
The engine fire follows a collision between an American Airlines regional jet and a military helicopter in Washington DC in January, killing a total of 67 people.
A Delta Air Lines aircraft crashed on arrival at Toronto Pearson International airport last month and all 76 passengers and four crew survived.
