Portugal border strikes off after government intervention

Planned strike action by Portuguese immigration officers will not take place after government intervention.

The walkouts were due to take place from May 31 to June 28, prompting the Foreign Office to warn of possible delays on its travel advice for the country.

Portugal is the only mainstream summer holiday destination that is available to UK travellers thanks to its green list status.

Algarve Tourism issued a statement on Friday which said: “The strikes at Portuguese airports by immigration officers, originally planned for June, will not be taking place as per the order of the Portuguese government through a legal decree, who have banned the strikes from happening, in order to guarantee essential activities, when there are serious disturbances in social, economic or political life.

“The UK FCDO has been informed and will be updating their travel advice accordingly.”

Portugal’s interior minister Eduardo Cabrita had earlier said the strikes threatened to “ruin the summer” and were “unacceptable and irresponsible”, the Daily Express reported.
