The re-opening of Doncaster Sheffield airport (DSA) has been described as the “number one priority” for the local mayor.
Councillor Ros Jones and City of Doncaster Council have given unanimous backing to reinstate the airport which was shut as by operator Peel Group in November 2022
Under a plan outlined last week Peel Group would retain ownership but lease it to the council. The council would then appoint an operator who would run it on its behalf.
Fifteen airport operators have reportedly come forward expressing interest, with an appointment hoped for in March 2024.
Jones and council cabinet members heard that the airport is a “viable proposition” and could be in profit within five years of reopening.
She said: “Re-opening Doncaster Sheffield airport is my number one priority.
“Finding a solution that would mean so much to local communities and businesses and underline our ambition as one of the UK’s newest cities is crucial.
“We are hopeful that a lease can be secured and look forward to working with interested parties in the reopening the airport.
“We have already initially tested the market for those industry experts who can partner with us to get the airport reopened as soon as we can.
“If we get the lease agreed then reopening the airport will not happen overnight of course but it would be a huge step forward.
“I do hope that we can share good news soon and continue the journey to reopen our airport.”
Cabinet supported recommendations to put in place arrangements to sign a lease if it is agreed as well as other requirements including potential funding support.
