Shoulder season trend identified in TravelSupermarket search data

A trend towards shoulder season travel due to cost of living concerns and summer heatwaves is revealed in new data based on searches on comparison site TravelSupermarket.

All of the five most booked departure dates in 2023 fell within the autumn period, suggesting a growing willingness from travellers to sacrifice hot weather for cheaper prices, according to the company.

However, the school summer holiday period still sees the most number of people going away overall.

The week offering the most value for families looking to get away this summer is the final week of school holidays in England (August 24-30).

The destination offering the best value week-long package holiday is Costa Blanca, with the best value week being July 20-26 where the average price is £652.

The analysis of millions of searches by customers comparing holidays, car hire, travel insurance, airport transfers found Tenerife to be the top destination for both last year and 2024.

Kos has seen the most growth in destination searches, up 129% over 2023.

Tunisia has overtaken Costa Brava as the cheapest short to mid-haul destination with a seven-night all-inclusive holiday averaging £485.17 per person.

Morocco and Egypt join Tunisia as among the cheapest all-inclusive countries, with Hammamet, Hurghada, Agadir, Marrakech and Sharm el Sheikh all featuring in the top 10.

Head of holidays and deals Chris Webber, author of the report, said: “Tenerife is proving that its year-round great weather and range of beaches, landscapes, culture and accommodation is irresistible to Brits as it has topped the most searched and most booked holiday destination charts for both 2023 and 2024 and again is the most popular for Easter and May half-term holidays.

“It has also experienced the second most amount of growth for holiday searches in 2024.

“As a UK anomaly, the Antalya area of Turkey was the most-compared destination for people flying from London in 2023.”

He added: “So far in 2024, the Greek island of Kos has experienced the most growth in searched for destinations, with searches up 129% compared to 2023.

“Tenerife is not far behind, but all the larger Canary Islands feature in the top 10.

“There have also been notable increases for Malta and Tunisia, too. With new flights to Tivat, Montenegro was also a major big growth area.

“The cheapest city break and long-haul destinations remain the same across 2023 and 2024.

“Brussels is on average £293.35 per person for a three-night city break and the popular long-haul destination Florida comes in at £1,008.48 per person for a seven night holiday.”
