Teesside airport almost doubles pre-pandemic passenger levels

Teesside airport has claimed its busiest summer in almost a decade.

Passenger numbers in August almost doubled from pre-pandemic levels, at 23,358 against 12,284 in the same month in 2019.

The figures emerged as summer departures ended at the weekend.

Ryanair is running winter flights to Alicante while KLM serves Amsterdam and Loganair operates to Aberdeen and Belfast.

Ryanair’s summer 2023 network from the airport close to Darlington covers Alicante, Corfu, Faro and Palma.

Tui is adding a weekly Antalya service on Thursdays between May 25 and September 21 in addition to Tuesday Palma flights between May 9 and October 24.

Balkan Holidays will be serving Bourgas in Bulgaria initially on Sundays from May 21 with a second flight on Thursdays between June 22 and September 7

Tees Valley mayor Ben Houchen said: “After an incredibly successful 2022, Teesside will be doing it all again next year with another packed schedule of flights to the locations local people have been crying out for – now including Antalya, Turkey.

“We’ve also proven that our £3 million terminal transformation has paid off, with satisfied passengers passing through from check-in to departures in no time.

“Air traffic control and airside crews have been doing their bit to keep everything moving too – and thanks to everyone’s efforts, we continue to be one of the UK’s most punctual airports.

“In almost doubling our pre-pandemic passenger numbers, it’s clear people from across Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool are getting behind their local airport and we’re looking forward to an even brighter 2023.”
