Washington DC tourism chief takes to streets to quiz visitors

The chief executive of the Washington DC tourist board has taken to the streets of the US capital to test visitors’ knowledge of the city.

Elliott Ferguson’s light-hearted video featured during a presentation at the IPW conference in San Antonio on Wednesday as he updated delegates on new developments in the city.

These include eight new hotels under construction and a further eight being renovated, alongside a major renovation and expansion of Union Station which has been granted approval.

Marketing focuses include sustainability, diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), the 60th anniversary of Dr Martin Luther King Jnr’s ‘I have a Dream’ speech and the World Culture Festival which will be hosted on the National Mall from September 29 and October 1.

Ferguson also noted an additional $20.7 million for tourism promotion generated by the city’s Tourism Recovery District – which temporarily increased hotel taxes to create extra funding.

He added: “Our focus is not just on downtown but on our neighbourhoods and communities.”
