Royal Caribbean International and Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) have tightened mask policies on ships as public health standards “evolve” in response to rising Omicron case numbers.
Masks are now required for all Royal guests aged two and above regardless of vaccination status unless eating or drinking.
Royal said the new policy would be reviewed on January 5, 2022.
Previously, masks were required for all guests but there were designated areas and venues where vaccinated guests were able to remove their face covering.
Royal’s website says: “We are continually evaluating mask policies as public health standards and government regulations evolve. Booked guests will be advised of the latest requirements for their port of departure before sailing.”
NCL confirmed it updated onboard health and safety protocols on December 17. A spokesperson for the line said: “Guests must now wear masks on board while indoors, except when actively eating or drinking or when in their stateroom.
“We are also asking guests to wear masks outdoors when social distancing is not possible, and to adhere to local regulations when visiting ports of call.”
It had previously operated with a mask-free onboard policy in place.
