Exploring Nova Scotia by car allows you to visit some amazing spots in its stunning national parks and along its jaw-dropping coastline

Canada is a vast country, but the second-smallest province, Nova Scotia, packs a punch with its array of nature-filled adventures, rich heritage and magnificent coastal vistas. And this can all be experienced on a road trip. Nova Scotia is similar in size to Scotland, making it easy to create itineraries for your clients – whether for two weeks or just a few days.

Start in Halifax, the province’s capital, just over a six-hour direct flight from London, and accessible from other UK airports with a connection. The Halifax Citadel National Historic Site shows how the city defended itself, with interactive activities giving visitors a taste of life as a soldier. And don’t miss the Waterfront district, where boutique shops, breweries and great dining options stretch along the two-mile boardwalk.

Next, head west to Peggy’s Cove, where the iconic Peggy’s Point Lighthouse – one of more than 160 across Nova Scotia – stands proud on the craggy rocks. Admire the stunning coastal scenery and explore the picturesque village.

Venture on by winding around the coast or cutting inland to explore Nova Scotia’s beautiful landscapes. Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site makes for a great day or overnight stay at a campsite. Follow the canoe routes of the Mi’kmaq, hike through the woodlands with a guide or on your own, and spot some of the wildlife such as reptiles and deer.

Sea views

The Bay of Fundy is a must-see. Stretching along the northwest shores of the province, it boasts some of the highest tides in the world. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views all along the coast and marvel at fossilised trees and creatures at Joggins Fossil Cliffs, a Unesco World Heritage Site.

And then there’s Cape Breton Island, home to the Cabot Trail, widely acclaimed as one of the world’s most scenic drives. This 185-mile loop can be driven in a day, but recommend your clients take their time to really soak in the incredible ocean views, hiking routes and hidden gems they’re certain to discover along the way. The Cape Breton Highlands are a real highlight. With so many green mountains, picture-perfect lakes and crashing waterfalls to see, visitors won’t want to come home.
