Combine thrilling activities with spectacular landscapes on this unspoilt Caribbean island
Adventure takes a different form in Tobago. Blanketed by verdant rainforest, surrounded by the warm waters of the Caribbean and inhabited by a rich variety of wildlife, this untouched gem of an island isn’t in short supply of breathtaking nature.
It’s against these awe-inspiring backdrops that adventure seekers can get their fix of unique experiences, fusing unspoilt nature with fast-paced fun. Complemented by the island’s lively culture, laid-back people and rich heritage, Tobago makes the perfect choice for an adventure holiday.
Adventures at sea
For high-speed thrills, water babies can take to the sea and try their hand at kiteboarding or windsurfing. But for those who want to explore further, no visit to Tobago is complete without venturing into the deep to get up close and personal with the rainbow of marine life that calls the waters home.
The untouched reefs are teeming with vibrant sponges and colourful corals, including one of the world’s largest brain corals. Nestled among the sloping reefs of Kelleston Drain (just off the coast of Little Tobago), the brain coral has been growing for centuries and some parts measure an impressive five metres in width.
Tobago has more than 50 well‑established dive sites scattered across its surrounding waters, meaning beginners and experienced divers alike can explore the reefs, either solo or in the company of an experienced guide. As well as an array of tropical fish, barracudas, nurse sharks and rays can be spotted. Lucky divers may also catch a glimpse of a majestic leatherback turtle.
Clients can see the ocean in a whole new light under the cover of darkness. From the comfort of a kayak or stand-up paddleboard, they can marvel at the shimmering plankton as it lights up the water on a bioluminescence tour.
Exploring on foot
Under the emerald blanket – Tobago’s vast rainforest – there’s plenty of adventure to be found.
Wanderers should embark on one of the many hiking routes that pass through the Unesco-listed Main Ridge Forest Reserve while keeping an eye out for some of the 260 species of birdlife native to the island. It’s possible to spot Tobago’s national bird, the impressively plumed cocrico, as well as red-throated frigatebirds and six species of hummingbird.
Outside the rainforest, there’s a multitude of trails that are perfect for exploring the island at any pace.
Clients can choose from smooth, meandering paths punctuated by scenic waterfalls, or opt for a more challenging ascent that rewards its trekkers with far-reaching views of the island and beyond.
For those who prefer to explore on two wheels, there’s also an ample selection of biking trails that lead to secluded lookout spots.
Liming and dining
Tobago’s vibrant culture makes for the perfect after-party to any adventurous itinerary. While soaking up the island’s free spirit, visitors to Tobago can immerse themselves in local life to get a true taste of this exciting destination.
Foodies will love tasting local specialities, such as curried crab and dumplings, at the street food stalls and family-run restaurants.
Or, after a busy day exploring, they can simply spend some time‘liming’ – the Tobagonian term for hanging out and relaxing. After all, what is an adventure holiday without a little winding-down time?
Three top tips
From market expert Just Tobago
1. How much time should you spend on Tobago?
We would recommend at least a week’s stay in Tobago to enjoy all the different areas of the island.
2. What can’t clients leave Tobago without doing?
A hike with an experienced guide in the rainforest.
3. What fitness levels do you need for an active trip?
If clients are used to an active lifestyle, then they will be able to enjoy a whole host of activities, from snorkelling to stand-up paddleboarding. Those who aren’t as active can still enjoy Tobago with birdwatching adventures and glass-bottomed boat trips.
