Explora Journeys has confirmed it will build its fifth and sixth ships, with both running on hydrogen power.
The luxury arm of the MSC Group announced plans to build Explora V and Explora VI last year, but has now confirmed “firm orders” for the vessels, which will be built at Fincantieri shipyard in Trieste and come into service in 2027 and 2028, respectively.
The line said it brings the total cost for its six ships to €3.5 billion.

In addition to hydrogen, Explora V and Explora VI will be capable of using alternative fuels such as bio and synthetic gas and methanol, as well as liquefied natural gas (LNG) engines.
Explora Journeys’ first ship, Explora I (pictured), entered service in August and is currently operating in northern Europe.
Explora II will join the fleet in summer 2024, followed by Explora III in summer 2026 and Explora IV in 2027.
