Rebound in performance of agents and operators reported

The travel sector outpaced others in October as monthly gross domestic product (GDP) edged up by 0.5% following a fall of 0.6% the previous month.

New data from the Office for National Statistics shows that the UK economy contracted by 0.3% between August and October as high prices affected businesses and households.

However, the ONS said: “There were also positive contributions from travel agency, tour operator and other reservation service and related activities, which grew by 7.1% in October 2022 after a 9.7% fall in September 2022.”

Sports activities, amusement and recreation activities grew by 5.9% in October after an 8.2% fall in the previous month.

September’s activity was hit by an additional bank holiday for the Queen’s state funeral.

The ONS said: “Estimates for September 2022 were affected by the bank holiday for the State Funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, where some businesses may have closed or operated differently on this day.”

Economic activity slowed across all the main sectors including production, construction and services over the three months.
