Albufeira proposes fines for wearing swimwear in public places

Tourists to Albufeira could risk facing a fine for not covering up away from the beach.

The coastal city in the Algarve has updated its code of conduct to prohibit people from being in a state of partial or complete nudity in public areas.

Not complying, for example by leaving the beach still in swimwear, could result in a fine of between €500 and €2,500 for partial nudity.

Potential fines increase to between €1,000 and €4,000 for full nudity in a public area.

The code also bans other examples of antisocial behaviour such as sex, spitting and urinating in public spaces with fines.

It  is open for public consultation for 30 days and stipulates these proposed changes were designed to “limit abusive behaviours” and preserve Albufeira as a tourism destination and for local residents.

The mayor of the city announced he would create a code of conduct for public spaces to “regulate behaviour and excesses” in areas with nightlife venues last year.
