Brussels placed on highest terror alert after fatal double shooting

British people in Brussels have been warned to avoid all non-essential travel with a gunman at large after a deadly shooting.

Two people were killed and another reportedly injured in the centre of the Belgian capital which led to a Belgium-Sweden Euro 2024 qualifier football match in there city being abandoned.   

The shooting took place on Boulevard d’Ypres in central Brussels on Monday evening. 

The city was on its highest terror alert as the gunman, who appeared to have an assault rifle, remained at large.

Police in Brussels reportedly shot a man today in a manhunt for the assailant.

In updated travel advice for Belgium last night (Monday), the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) said: “The authorities have confirmed two fatalities. Attacker is not detained and still at large. 

“Avoid the area and follow the advice of local authorities. 

“Brussels-Capital Region is now at threat level 4 of 4. This means you should avoid all non-essential travel, including commuting and taking children to school.”

Belgian media reported that the two people killed were wearing football shirts belonging to the Swedish national team.

Federal prosecutors said a terrorism inquiry has been opened over the shooting.
