New York City tourism chief appointed to lead Brand USA

NYC Tourism + Conventions chief executive Fred Dixon is leaving to lead Brand USA, the nation’s travel marketing organisation.

He will leave his current role on June 5 before starting as president and chief executive of Brand USA on July 15.

Dixon will succeed Chris Thompson, who announced his retirement from Brand USA in July 2023.

NYC Tourism + Conventions board chair Charles Flateman described the departure of Dixon as a “bittersweet moment” for the organisation and New York City’s tourism industry.

“For nearly 20 years, Fred Dixon has been synonymous with New York City tourism, the industry’s continued success and its impact on New York City,” Flateman said.

“His leadership and expertise created a template for excellence in destination marketing and the team of talented individuals who make the work possible.

“We are thrilled beyond measure for him in this new role and know that he will always be a champion for NYC.”

NYC Tourism + Conventions chief marketing officer Nancy Mammana has been named a interim chief executive. A search committee has been formed to lead the process of identifying and selecting a new chief executive.

US Travel Association president and chief executive Geoff Freeman said: “Fred Dixon is a world-class destination marketing professional with a keen eye for talent and successful marketing strategies.

“His experience in New York City and focus on metrics, accountability and achieving ambitious goals are critical attributes as Brand USA writes its next chapter.

“Fred’s deep relationships across the business community and throughout the travel industry position him extraordinarily well to lead Brand USA and build on the strong foundation provided by Chris Thompson.

“The US Travel Association – and the entire travel industry – congratulates Fred on this well-deserved new opportunity and looks forward to partnering with him to steer Brand USA into the future.”

Dixon said: “I am incredibly honoured and excited to serve as the next president and CEO of Brand USA.

“The US is one of the world’s premiere travel destinations that will only continue to draw and delight visitors from across the globe, and we are well positioned for future growth and success.

“I want to thank Chris for his many years of leadership and his friendship. I look forward to joining this team and working across the industry to propel us forward.”
