Royal Caribbean International’s second giant Icon class ship is to be named Star of the Seas.
The name for the new vessel to enter service in summer 2025 was unveiled less than 100 days before 7,600-passenger Icon of the Seas embarks on its maiden cruise from Miami in January.
Star of the Seas will become the third ship in the line’s fleet to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).
The mega ship will combine the use of the cleanest-burning marine fuel available to date with a “proven line-up” of industry-leading environmental programmes on board, according to the company.
“With applications ranging from waste heat recovery systems to shore power connection, Royal Caribbean’s most sustainable ship will advance parent company Royal Caribbean Group’s journey to introducing a net-zero cruise ship by 2035,” a statement added.
Currently being built in Turku, Finland, the new ship and its features will soon be revealed, Royal Caribbean added.
No details of itineraries have yet been disclosed.
Icon of the Seas led to the line’s single largest booking day and highest volume booking week in the brand’s then 53-year history in October 2022.
The “unprecedented” consumer demand sparked Royal Caribbean to release2025-26 holidays on Icon of the Seas three months ahead of schedule.
Royal Caribbean International president and chief executive Michael Bayley said: “The idea of combining the best of every type of vacation into one ultimate adventure has created more excitement than ever anticipated, and Star of the Seaswill be the next bold answer to the record-breaking consumer demand we’ve seen for nearly a year and counting with Icon of the Seas.”
