Summer strike action starts at Red Funnel Isle of Wight ferry firm

A revised summer timetable has been created as workers at Isle of Wight ferry firm Red Funnel start strike action from today (Wednesday).

Around 120 Red Funnel staff working on the Southampton-Cowes route also plan a series of 24-hour walk outs throughout August in a dispute over pay.

The strike dates have been confirmed by the Unite union for August 1, 3, 5 9, 11, 15, 17, 19, 23, 26 and 29.

The strikes will impact Cowes Week, which runs from 30 July 30 to August 6, as well as the summer holidays, Unite warned.

Red Funnel insisted vessels will continue to keep sailing daily, but with a reduced timetable for its vehicle ferry service. The company does not expect to make changes to its Red Jet fast passenger service.

The company said: “We regret to remind our customers about planned strike activity within our business starting from 27 July and also planned for 1, 3, 5, 9, 11, 15, 17, 19, 23, 26, and 29 August.

“We wish to thank all customers for their understanding and support as our teams work very hard to keep everyone moving and sailing.

“Please note that due to a shortage in staff some team members may be assisting in areas where they do not normally work, so we thank our customers for their patience and kindness.

“We will continue to do our best to deliver our service as efficiently as we can, but please note that strike days may be subject to further disruptions.”

Unite announced plans for industrial action last month after rejecting a pay offer.
