Tui warns about fake accounts on social media

Tui is warning about potential scams after the company discovered Twitter accounts impersonating it.

The caution was issued by Tui UK on social media on Wednesday.

Headed “Important”, the post stated: “We’re aware of multiple accounts impersonating TUI UK on Twitter.”

It added: “Please be aware that @tuiuk is our only official account. Do not send any personal information to any other users as it may be a scam. If you’re unsure please tweet us or contact us on 0203 451 2688.”

Under new owner Elon Musk, this month Twitter stripped verified accounts of their ‘blue tick’ and introduced a charge for the symbol.

A Tui spokesperson said: “We are aware of a small number of accounts impersonating TUI UK on Twitter.

“We have reported them to Twitter, and urge the public to never share important information on social media.”

Barry Gooch, chairman of Prevention of Fraud in Trade (Profit), said: “Fraud and scams through social media are increasingly common, meaning companies need to make sure their brand and pages are not being copied to commit fraud and damage the true owner’s brand.

“In all cases, the platform help centre can help to remove the impersonating pages and can usually be approached through a reporting form.

“Make sure when completing the form that you include details of the scam and of your genuine ownership of the brand.”

He added: “Where it is possible to do so, and you are confident of your grounds, you can post messages on the fake account warning potential users that it is a fake account or page and should not be used and advising where to find your genuine account or page.”

Gooch also recommended reporting to Action Fraud and Profit.
